FRIENDS OF MONARC - PAIGE AKA @paileaa
Posted on June 12 2019
It is always energising to see my own ideals around sustainability reflected in those of my peers. Paige and I meet at the Monarc studio a few months back, she is the clever creator of paige-leanne.com and has a spirit that feels like a breath of fresh air. We've had conversation after conversation about how we perceive and practice sustainability in our London-based lives. We'd like to share some of our discussions, and publish our Summer Essentials Edit, Part I.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH SUSTAINABLE CHOICES IN YOUR EVERYDAY?
PAIGE: I always carry a water bottle with me if I know I’m going to be out all day so that I can refill it in Pret (they have free tap water stations in their London shops!). I only use bar soap, never liquid as the chemicals in liquid soap and the plastic bottle are bad for the environment. I’m also vegetarian and eat minimal animal products to help reduce my carbon footprint and help save the animals.

TOP 5 SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS YOU USE?
1. Ohne tampons, which are biodegradable and bleach free! I have a subscription and they’re posted through my letterbox every month.
2. I don’t use aerosols so finding a good deodorant has taken a while, I love Lowengrip roll on deodorant and Malin and Goetz eucalyptus deodorant.
3. Bamboo toothbrushes, so good and no different to plastic ones. This is an easy way to reduce unnecessary plastic.
4. Metal straws, I carry a few in my bag when I know I’ll be drinking as they’re really good for pub gardens! But more importantly, refusing plastic straws when you order drinks! My pet hate is ordering a drink and they give you a straw as standard!
5. A keep cup when travelling. They’re really handy as I feel you always want more tea and coffee when you’re travelling. It's also a bonus that you can save money on hot drinks in most coffee shops now by using a keep cup!

YOU STUDIED FASHION. HOW HAVE YOUR STUDIES AFFECTED OR LED YOU TO YOUR CURRENT POSITION/PATH?
Whilst at university, I honestly didn’t think twice when buying fast fashion! My thoughts have totally changed now and I have reduced my fast fashion consumption so, so much.
My tutor at uni was very passionate about denim and would teach us about how much water is used to create washed denim and how bad it was for the environment as the toxic water usually gets released into streams and rivers, which we saw first hand in Stacey Dooley’s recent documentary - watch it here. This was probably the starting point for beginning to make conscious and educated decisions.
My current path is very different to the thoughts and feelings I had 5 years ago. I am incredibly conscious of my consumption. I am now making educated choices every day to reduce my consumption, carbon footprint and use of animal by-products. I now only use vegan and cruelty-free beauty products and I'm working on completely eliminating eggs and cheese from my diet (they’re currently the only animal products I consume).
WHICH MONARC JEWELLERY PIECES DO YOU TREASURE?
Every single piece! I LOVE my Courbure ring in gold, I’ve worn it every day since I got it & have so many people ask about it!

WHAT HELPS YOU MAINTAIN A GENERAL SENSE OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS? ANY PEARLS OF WISDOM YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?
For health, stop eating meat. Eat all the veg you can and reduce your dairy intake. I used to suffer from really bad acne so I stopped consuming milk over 2 years ago and my skin has clearly up so much. I also find that I bloat less and feel so much better now that I don't eat meat. What you put into your body affects your physical and mental form much more than anyone realises.
For happiness, always say yes to plans/gigs/events. Socialise as much as you can (within reason). Create strong relationships with your friends and have people you can wholeheartedly rely on. Get to the stage where you can tell them anything and know that if you called them at 4am, they’d answer!
I also strongly believe in karma. You have to put out to the universe what you want to get back. Give the love to get the love, and my favourite motto: positive vibes and good times!
