FACET

A flat surface on a geometric shape – a single cut plane of a gemstone. Many

gemstones grow with naturally occurring facets. Where facets are created using a
machine, the planes are carefully considered to for the overall cut. A brilliant cut
diamond contains 57 or 58 facets in varying shapes, including table (the top of the
stone), star (which surround the table) kite or crown, upper gridle, lower girdle,
pavilion or arrow and culet – the tiny facet at the bottom of a diamond (that often
appears as a point).
